Coffee Table Legs For Your Home
By Melody Buller
While the coffee table may seem like it has always been a part of home decor, they actually did not come into use in the American home until the 1920s. While coffee lovers in England was active in coming up with furniture pieces to facilitate a coffee shop type atmosphere, their solution was a table that still stood at about 27 inches tall. The much shorter coffee table height of 18-20 inches which has now become "standard," came into play when the prohibition of the 1920s changed the focus of the home entertainment scene. As people moved away from cocktails toward coffee, J. Stuart Foote was there to meet the new demand, and named himself the inventor of the coffee table. Until Mr. Foote's company - the Imperial Furniture Company - began mass producing this newly needed furniture, ordinary citizens were relegated to sawing the legs of higher tables to bring them down to the appropriate height. Despite its relatively recent beginning, the coffee table quickly gained popularity in the American home.

Even though its design is actually relatively new to the home decor scene, the coffee table is without a doubt the centerpiece of the living room. Whether it bears a vase with a lovely display of flowers or greenery, an array of magazines for the perusal of guests and family, or simply a few unobtrusive sets of coasters; this is where the focus of the living room rests. It may be the place where children color, the location of a family game night, or just - as its name suggests - a resting place for coffee mugs while old friends catch up on the goings on of their daily lives. Just as there are many purposes to coffee tables, there is no limit to the style of a table, either; it may be slender and delicate in frame, or it can be strong and stalwart, or one of myriad styles in between. Likewise, the legs that support it can take many forms. A more delicate table may be gracefully set upon slender turned legs, where a more massive table might find its foundation on thicker Mission-style coffee table legs.

Whether the legs needed are simple but strong like the Shaker and Mission styles, elegant and graceful like a Cabriole style leg, or sleek and smooth turnings from the simple to the elaborate; quality coffee table legs are essential to a living room that feels truly "complete." Wooden table legs can make or break the thematic unity of a home, and give the discerning designer an opportunity to set the tone for the interactions that will take place in the room.

Osborne Wood Products gives designers, furniture makers, hobbyists, and homeowners the opportunity to truly express themselves in their furniture and home decor choices. Osborne carries a full line of wooden legs for coffee tables, as well as decorative turnings and carved legs in many other heights. Ideal for a Mission-style coffee table, tapered mission legs are available at a five inch width, creating the bold and strong look the Mission look calls for. A narrower taper is available without the recessed carving, creating a look that is more along the lines of the Shaker style. In addition, a variety of turnings are available, from the simple yet elegant English Country leg, to the more ornate Old World leg. For those occasions which call for something a little bit different, Osborne Wood Products is also more than happy to work with their customers to create custom wood legs. For a quality coffee table with classic appeal, the right wood legs will make a world of difference.
